We have the opportunity to name the new road that will lead to our new church home! Everyone is invited to submit name ideas, and any member household (including children) are invited to vote on the finalists this July during Chalice Camp!
Our congregation has held several names over the years: First Universalist Society, Grace Church, First Universalist Church, and now First Unitarian Universalist Church.
We have also gathered at different intersections and streets: 2nd & 2nd, 3rd & 3rd, and our current street which we named in the 1960s, Walden Lane. We are now moving toward a new place, at the intersection of preserved wilderness and public witness.
What we know is that the new road, per municipalities, will end in Place.
We welcome your nominations for names!
Here’s our timeline:
May: Submission of names (in the Commons or SUBMIT HERE)
June: Leaders finalize list
July 13-19: Voting! (ranked choice online, during Chalice Camp)
Sunday, July 20: Name announced
Early September: Name dedicated at new “Place”
Inspirations for naming:
First UU History and values:
Our Mission: To be a welcoming, compassionate community that nurtures spiritual growth and practices justice.
Unitarian Universalism: https://www.uua.org/beliefs
Finally, inspiration from poet, the Rev. Lindasusan Ulrich:
Open the doors as far as they will go
Draw on the strength of the stones beneath you
Ground yourself in a firm sense of who you are
Rise as a beacon welcoming the next seeker
And shine far beyond the lintel and sill
Open all that you are
Heighten and deepen your connections to the world around you
Broaden your definition of neighbor
Grow into the largest target for grace that you can muster
And pray to become a gateway for even greater love and compassion
