Sunday Morning Hospitality at First UU

Thank you for being a part of Sunday Morning Hospitality at First UU Church. You are joining a like-hearted family of people who endeavor to create a warm and welcoming community for all who enter our doors, from first-time visitors to longtime members. Do you have a passion for meeting new people, discovering connections, and making others feel comfortable? If so, we hope you will find volunteering in this capacity for our church to be equally rewarding. Please know that your service is deeply appreciated by all.

COVID PROTOCOL will be in place starting on August 15th, 2021, until further notice.
In-person services will start on August 15th, 2021, with registration required to attend 9 am and 11 am services. 

Masks will be required inside the building at all times.

Social Hour will be held outside on our patio/ Memorial garden area (weather permitting) until further notice.

Hospitality Liaisons

  • Oversee Sunday morning hospitality practices and volunteers to create a warm welcome for everyone who comes to our church, whether they are first-time visitors or long-time congregants.
  • Serve as role models for welcoming and inclusion, encouraging volunteering and involvement, and training new volunteers.
  • Plan Quarterly Meetings (which may include training, community building, recognition, new information).

Greeter  (2 per service, or one family)

Greeters create the first impression of welcome to visitors and congregants arriving for Sunday morning services. They are friendly, warm, inviting, and accepting of all who enter.  Greeters:

  • Arrive 30 minutes before service:
    • 9 am service: arrive at 8:30 am
    • 10 am service: arrive at 9:30 am
    • 11 am service: arrive at 10:30 am
  • Apply Greeter ribbon to name tag.
  • Stand/sit in the front lobby of the church, visible to those entering church.
  • Welcome members and visitors with big smiles. 
    COVID PROTOCOL : Please offer a friendly wave or pump of hand sanitizer in place of a handshake or hug.
  • Remind members to wear a name tag. (COVID PROTOCOL: Members will be encouraged to take name tags home and wear them to church to discourage bottlenecking in the entryway.)
  • Direct new visitors and guests to our Welcome Table.
  • Orient guests to hand sanitizer stations, stairs, elevator, RE Wing, restrooms or Commons as needed.
  • At least one greeter should stay for the first five minutes of the service to welcome latecomers.
  • Please join us in the service and thank you for making visitors feel welcome! 

Welcome Table Host (1 for each service)

Welcome Table Hosts serve to orient guests and visitors to First Unitarian Universalist Church. They offer information, hospitality, and acceptance, striving to make visitors feel welcome and showing them ways to get involved if they are interested. Welcome Table Hosts:

  • Arrive 30 minutes before service:
    • 9am service:  arrive at 8:30am
    • 10am service: arrive at 9:30am
    • 11am service: arrive at 10:30am
  • Apply Welcome Table ribbon to name tag.
  • Stand/sit in the front lobby of the church near our Welcome Table.
  • Welcome everyone with big smiles
    COVID PROTOCOL : Please offer a friendly wave or pump of hand sanitizer in place of a handshake or hug.
  • Offer guests a name tag (if they would like a permanent one, please have them sign up on the sheet in the guest book).
  • Invite guests to fill out our “Guest Information” Sheet in binder.
  • Offer Welcome Packet (in large colored envelope).
  • Orient guests to hand sanitizer stations, stairs, elevator, RE Wing, Restrooms, Commons.
  • Invite guests to our Social Hour.
  • If the guest would like to be taken to RE Wing or Sanctuary, please alert the Coordinator of Congregational Life or another member to assist.
  • Five minutes before the start of our service, please encourage people congregating in the lobby and Commons to head to the Sanctuary.
  • Please join us in the service, and thank you for being a welcoming presence! 

Usher (2 per service)

Ushers serve to welcome people into our Sanctuary, help members and guests find seats, provide assistance if needed, distribute Orders of Service, and coordinate the offertory. 

  • Arrive 30 minutes before service:
    • 9am service:  arrive at 8:30am
    • 10am service: arrive at 9:30am
    • 11am service: arrive at 10:30am

COVID PROTOCOL  The donation plates will not be passed from person to person at this time. Instead, offertory boxes will be placed by each door in the sanctuary and in the Hearth Room.

(When collection resumes, additional volunteer(s) can be invited to help with the center aisle(s) offertory before the service begins.)

*NOTE: The “Usher’s Box” and white attendance book are in the back of the Sanctuary by the audio cabinet.

  • Apply an Usher ribbon to your name tag.
  • Connect with the 2nd Usher. It’s important that both ushers communicate beforehand so shared responsibilities are clearly covered. Please check to see if there are special instructions from the Worship Associate.
  • Divide shared Usher Duties before guests arrive:
  1. Place Orders of Service (Bulletins) at each entrance to the Sanctuary.
  2. Make sure offertory boxes are at each door.
  3. Make sure hearing devices are at each door.
  4. Check the Hearth Room for bulletins, an offering plate, and a chalice.
  5. Find additional volunteers to help monitor the center aisles (when plate collection resumes).
    • Stay near the door to the Sanctuary to greet guests and hand out bulletins, provide special assistance, large print bulletins, and hearing devices.
      COVID PROTOCOL: Please offer a friendly wave or pump of hand sanitizer in place of a handshake or hug.
  • COVID PROTOCOL: Sanctuary doors will stay open for the service until further notice. (Ushers usually close them when the morning announcements are finished.)
  • OFFERTORY:  COVID PROTOCOL: Please invite those attending to place their offering into the boxes at any time throughout the service.  
  • One usher counts the guests in the Sanctuary, while the other usher counts individuals in the Hearth Room and Commons 
  • Enter the count in the attendance book at the back of the Sanctuary, and place all monies in the zippered bank bag.
  • (In regular times, we would open the Sanctuary doors for the Benediction.)
  • Encourage guests to join us for Social Hour as they are leaving.
  • Please take the zippered money bag to the administration office, lock it and place it in the small brown cabinet with a chalice sticker (next to Erika’s desk). Place the money bag key in the black locked box just outside Connie’s office. Ushers will no longer count  or record the money.  This will be done at the opening of the church week by our office administrator.
  • Thank you for being a welcoming presence and helping to count!

Social Hour Host (1 per service)

The Social Hour Host serves to welcome people to Social Hour, paying special attention to newcomers and visitors. The Host also keeps a watchful eye on the beverage service, tidying and replenishing as needed.

NOTE* This volunteer position no longer requests volunteers to assist in the kitchen. Darin Podulke-Smith (Property Steward) will be in charge of all coffee and refreshments at our Social Hour.            

COVID PROTOCOL: For now, there will only be one Social Hour, to be held between services (from 10 am to 11 am)

  • Stand in the upper Hearth Room to welcome and direct those coming to Social Hour.
    COVID PROTOCOL : Please offer a friendly wave or pump of hand sanitizer in place of a handshake or hug.
  • Assist guests who may need extra help (Walker trays are stored in the back closet).
  • Invite parents/children to the Children’s area.
  • Mingle during Social Hour, checking in with newcomers and visitors. Confirm that they received a Welcome Packet as they arrived. Introduce them to other members and facilitate connections when possible, answer any questions, and focus on listening.
  • Clear any abandoned cups and place them in the stainless steel bin. Paper cups can go in regular trash cans.
  • Please be watchful of anything that may need refilling at the beverage station (coffee, hot water, tea, cream, sugar, napkins, cups, and spoons), and ask Darin to refill. If Darin is not available, please enter the kitchen to replenish supplies.
    • COVID PROTOCOL: Only Staff and Social Hour hosts are allowed in the kitchen.
