Welcoming Congregation

We know that religious spaces haven’t always been welcoming places for all people, especially when it comes to gender and sexuality. We are out to change that.

Since 2001, First UU has been a certified Welcoming Congregation. We have worked hard to make sure lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people are full members of our faith communities. Being welcoming means striving for radical inclusion and creating spaces that honor every part of our identities, backgrounds, and experiences.

The work of welcome is never done. Welcoming Congregations can learn more about how to be truly welcoming to all people by renewing their commitment.

Greater Minnesota Two-Spirit & LGBTQIA+ History Map

Greater Minnesota has a long and storied Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ history. First Unitarian Universalist Church is part of this history. The Minnesota Historical Society facilitated a participatory storytelling project in August of 2025. The writers/creators of this project say, “Our mission is to build trusting, sustained relationships with Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities in Greater Minnesota in ways that honor communities as the authors, leaders, and owners of their own histories.” Click on the link below to learn more and find out how First UU is connected.
