July 7, 2024 – On Loneliness and the Longing to Belong

More people report feeling lonely than ever before. In 2023, the US Surgeon General labeled loneliness an epidemic, and called for us to focus on its antidote: “the healing effects of social connection and community.” Rev. Sara will reflect on the many forms loneliness takes, and how our fundamental human need to belong is a deeply spiritual longing.

After two decades in Unitarian Universalist ministry, Rev. Justin Schroeder and his wife, Juliana Keen, launched Holding Space for Change (www.holdingspaceforchange.com), a practice that accompanies and supports people through life transitions. They provide spiritual  direction/accompaniment, therapy, grief support groups, divorce support groups, life-transition support groups, and more, helping to guide people toward a life giving new beginning. 

The D’Sievers is a jazz group featuring trombone that has been performing in southeast Minnesota for many years.  They have performed at regional festivals like the Twin Cities Jazz Fest, The Minnesota Original Music Festival, and the Rochester City Jazz Fest.  They have an original album of music called “Trombots and Mermaids” that you can stream everywhere.

Rev. Dr. Andrea Johnson is a community minister affiliated with First Universalist Church in Minneapolis. She recently completed her Doctor of Ministry in public theology at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. The title of her dissertation is: Human Liberation, Sacred Nature, and the Inescapable Network of Mutuality: Theologically Grounding Unitarian Universalism’s Quest to Dismantle White Supremacy.

Rev. Schuyler Vogel is a Unitarian Universalist minister and currently serves as the Chaplain of Carleton College, in Northfield MN. Previously, he served as the Senior Minister of the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York.

Jacqueline Schwab has played for over 15 Ken Burns PBS documentaries, including his “Civil War.” She has performed at the White House for President Clinton, and has accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. She recently collaborated with The American Pops Orchestra, for their December 31, 2022, American Roots PBS special. As a solo pianist, she has performed vintage American music in almost every State of the Union.

The Walden Hill Vocal Ensemble performs excerpts from Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard. Johnson composed this work in response to the 1998 kidnapping, beating, and death of a 21-year-old gay man whose name was Matthew Shepard.

Rev. Brian Mason, the son of missionaries, factory workers, and caregivers grew up in Missouri’s Mississippi River Valley. After three years working as a chaplain at Saint Louis University Hospital, he was called to serve the First Universalist Unitarian Church of Wausau WI where he’s been since 2017. He and his wife of 13 years live in Wausau with their offspring and a dog.

From Eau Claire, WI Jerrika Mighelle (she/they) has been performing since her first gig in 2004 with her sisters in their band QuinnElizabeth. Jerrika is a proud non-binary, queer Americana artist who has released three studio albums. Their lastest record Be Brave was released in July of 2023 and is streaming everywhere. Jerrika is also currently working on their Masters of Human Rights degree at the University of MN.
