For thirty-five years, the UUA’s Green Sanctuary program has supported congregations in their commitment to the environment. Previously resulting in the congregational certifications, the Green Sanctuary program, revitalized in February 2025, offers a flexible, manageable, and impactful process to effectively support UU’s in transforming congregations through climate justice.
Green Sanctuary 2030 includes four essentials of climate justice, five approaches to support your congregation, and just one requirement for yearly recognition; sharing your progress.
The four essentials at the heart of the program – Congregational Transformation, Justice, Community Resilience, and Mitigation – help congregational teams take well-rounded climate actions.
Congregational teams exploring the Green Sanctuary 2030 process have access to resources and activities that help to develop and nourish the team, ground actions in the realities of oppression and harm in our communities, create a shared re-imagining of our community thriving, explore possible actions for each of the four essentials for climate action, and make plans for short-term actions and long-term goals.
