Annual financial commitment supporting the church year

Dear Members and Friends of First UU Church of Rochester,

Welcome to the 2022 Tending the Flame Pledge Drive! We are reaching out to you to ask you to make a financial commitment to sustain our beloved church by submitting a pledge in support of the church fiscal year beginning June 1, 2022.

For those who may be new to this annual practice, the pledge drive directly supports the church’s operating budget for the coming new year. Following in the footsteps of our UU forebears since 1866, we ask for your participation and generous support so that together we can continue our mission to nurture spiritual growth and practice justice.

All of our pledges added together sustain our church, and commitments of all sizes are appreciated and needed. In this time of Covid we realize that individual situations may be changing and uncertain, so make a pledge that works for you and know that it can be modified in the future as needed.

This year’s pledge drive begins on February 14 and ends on March 17 🍀 . During this time, please visit with members of the pledge team in the lobby on Sundays between services, or visit the lobby table at any time to pick up a token of our gratitude – our thanks to you for pledging your support.

Your pledge can be completed online using Realm or the church web site’s Online Form. If you prefer a hard-copy form – Download and print HERE or pick one up at church at the pledge table.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the pledge team if you have questions, want to visit about stewardship, or wish to request contactless delivery of our gift of thanks to you.

And be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, March 5 at 7PM for the premiere of UUs Got Talent on YouTube. We know U won’t want to miss it!

Look for more updates about the 2022 Pledge Drive in your weekly eNews, and thank you for your ongoing support as we tend the flame together!

A letter from Rev. Luke Stevens-Royer, Board President Ann Hutton, and Barb Foss on behalf of the Pledge Team

March 3, 2022

Dear First UU Church,

It’s hard to calculate how much has changed in these last few years. How we connect, how we plan, how we pivot and change, and change again. It’s hard to calculate how much will change in the next few years: people, building, new ways of doing church.

These are remarkable years we’re living in. In many places, congregations are struggling to simply stay in existence. It is good to let that humble us, even as we are grateful for the vibrancy of this community with connections, care, and growth. We have weathered these years with astonishing health in our finances, our programming, and most importantly, our care for each other.

It’s hard to calculate how much hope our Universalist ancestors in a small chapel in downtown Rochester had for us. They, too, survived a pandemic, and uncertainty in their very existence, when a message of hope and good cheer and everlasting love was not popular. It doesn’t feel overly popular still.

And yet, here we are, in the improbability of not only existing for generations, but thriving and imagining what comes next.

This is only possible because of the love and care that this church has shared with each other for generations. We share, as we are able, our talents and treasures – and mostly, we share our heart.

It is hard to calculate how much it is worth to each of us to ensure this place of open minds and loving hearts exists far beyond ourselves.

It is our turn, now, to join in generations of generosity – to keep this improbable hope alive.
